This streetcar, STIB 17, is originally from Belgium where it was a utility car for the streetcar company. This series of slides shows how a streetcar is loaded onto a flat-bed trailer to be moved to another site, whether just a few blocks or across the country. First, the truck must line up the trailer very carefully so that the rails on the trailer are in line with the track on the ground. The truck used for this job has a very special trailer that can tilt towards the ground in the back so that the streetcar can be loaded onto the rails on the bed of the trailer. The truck also carries temporary rails to span the gap between the rails on the ground and the bed of the trailer and has a winch to pull the streetcar up onto the rails on the trailer. Cables and blocks, as well as the tight winch are used to hold the streetcar in place during its move. Then the trailer is returned to a level position and the truck takes the streetcar to its new location for unloading (see Moving WRECo 650). |
