Advertisements on this Capital Transit streetcar during World War II invite women to “Volunteer for a War Job” as members of the Women’s Auxiliary Transit Service.
Join us during Women’s History Month to discover the contributions by women in the transportation industry.
The history of women in transit is a vital yet often overlooked part of transportation history, particularly in the context of trolley systems. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, women played essential roles as passengers, workers, and advocates for improved transit services. In addition to their participation in daily commuting, many women contributed to the development and operation of trolley systems, whether as conductors, operators, or even through involvement in early labor movements for better working conditions.
Event activities include a presentation by our Museum Educator, crafts, karaoke, and a scavenger hunt.
