In 1854, 101 years before Rosa Parks’ protest in Montgomery, Alabama, school teacher Elizabeth Jennings was forcibly ejected from a Third Avenue Railway Co. horse-drawn street car in New York City because she was Black. Following this experience, she decided to fight racial discrimination on public transit in court and won, which led to the permanent desegregation of Third Ave. Rail Co.’s street car service.
